GOOD GOVERNANCE, DEMOCRACY AND PEACE

The adoption of SDGs has led to a major shift in developmental thinking. The global expectation is for all development actors to foster positive change in the elaboration of their mandates. This department has as mission to realize communities in which democracy, freedom and peace prevails with dignity, respect, tolerance and mutual understanding.  Specifically, the department engages in meaningful participation of women/children and youths in democracy and peace building. This is done through various facets including advocacy, edutainment and cultural festivals. The program is divided into the following axis:

PROGRAMS

  1. This is a program under the department with main focus on women involvement in peace building especially on UNSCR 1325, putting women at the forefront of peace and security agenda. The program dwells on four pillars; participation, prevention, protection/relief, and Recovery. This activity takes into strict consideration the increased participation and representation of women at all levels of decision making with attention to specific protection needs of women and girls in conflict situations. The program engages women in a more inclusive manner to intentionally and inclusively be part of development trends, stand at the front line in the promotion of Democracy, Human Rights, Peace and Security, Good Governance, Sustainable Development, Gender Equality while countering violent extremism.

This program is vested on engaging youths in peace building initiative with focus on UNSCR 2250. Young people play important positive role in the maintenance and promotion of peace worldwide. The program thus, identifies five key pillars (Participation, Protection, Prevention, Partnerships/disengagement and Reintegration). It uses diversified interventions such as; advocacy, peace festivals, arts for peace (music, drawing, painting, culinary arts, sports) and policy implementation. This initiative is to modernize and give youths the voice in the promotion of peace while countering violent extremism and improving livelihood of youths with and without disabilities. It also capacitates youths on right-base protection, national integrity, social cohesion and living together.

The Kids4Peace activity is an elementary activity which teaches children on civic engagements, peace building through arts work; drawings, peace messages, songs, poetry, games and more. The program uses the school-based approach through which children are taught on non-violent actions. The focus is to empower kids to engage in peace building initiatives through friend2friend (F2F) relationship and act of kindness, respect and tolerance and also through community services. This entails volunteers working regularly with small groups of children at F2F clubs in schools.
